If it has been a long time since your last glacier ice training session, the one-day update training is a perfect refresher.
The emphasis of the course is rope handling and on stopping and braking slides on steep glacier / snow slopes. Deepening your existing know-how and technical developments are taught and trained practically.
The Wiesbadener Hut with the Ochsental Glacier offers an ideal training plac.
Update programme:
- walking with crampons (with and without iceaxes)
- correct behaviour when sliding or falling
- rope up at glaciers
- Anchoring on glaciers (ice screws, „dead man", snow-anchor)
- to hold a fall
- crevasse rescue
- self-rescue from crevasses
- orientation and selection of tracks on glaciers
- information about risks
Attention: This is not an basic training course. Some technical knowledge and ability is a must have. Your existing skills are brought up to the latest technical level with intensive training!

Organisational
Arrival the previous day recommended. Course finishes Sunday 4 pm. To the hut it is about 2 hours walk from the Bielerhöhe –along a track, which the hut Guardian drives along with his Jeep. Cycling to the Hut by MTB is recommended, especially for the return journey. The toll ticket from the Hochalpenstraße can be stamped at the hut, then you do not have to pay tolls on the way home again.
If security permits the course takes place whatever the weather. Short-term modifications are reserved to the guide.
Equipment to bring with you:
- backpack (appropriate size)
- first-aid box, emergency blanket, personal medication
- headlamp
- alternate laundering (socks, shirt)
- second pair of gloves
- weatherproofs (jacket, over pant)
- gloves and cap
- unbreakable water bottle/Thermos flask (min. 1 ltr)
- sun protection( glacier glasses, hat, sun cream, lipstick)
- provisions to go
- mobile phone
- maps, guide, compass and altimeter, ev. GPS (optional)
- paper and pencil
- mountaineering shoes
- gaiter (depending on the pants)
- ski- / telescopic poles
- travel protection insurance / air ambulance insurance
- alpine member card (if available)

- hut sleping bag (a must on AC huts)
- hut slippers (usually available on huts)
